Claiming an education. Women and gender in the academy
The title of this seminar refers to a commencement address that the American poet and critic Adrienne Rich gave at a Douglass College (the women’s college of Rutgers University) in 1977. Rich’s point is that we must play an active role in our own education. Rich defines the educational experience in terms of agency and activity; as such, her argument forms the basis of a feminist pedagogy and of women’s studies. In this seminar, Prof Page will present an introduction to the history and development of women’s and gender studies in the American academy.
Prof. Judith Page is Professor of English & UF Distinguished Teaching Scholar and Director of the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research, University of Florida.
Prof. Sveva Magaraggia (Sociology, Università Bicocca) will stand in for Prof. Carmen Leccardi.
