David Throsby is Distinguished Professor of Economics at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.  He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Sydney and a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics.  He has published widely in the economics of art and culture, as well as in the economics of the environment and the economics of education.  He has been a consultant to many national and international organisations, including OECD, UNCTAD, UNESCO and the World Bank.  His current research interests include the role of artists as economic agents, sustainability of cultural capital, heritage economics, theories of value, culture in economic development, the cultural industries and the relationships between economic and cultural policy.  His book Economics and Culture (Cambridge University Press, 2001) has been translated into eight languages.  Together with Victor Ginsburgh, he edited the Handbook of the Economics of Art and Culture Vol. 1 (Elsevier Science/North-Holland, 2006), and a second volume is in preparation.  David Throsby’s new book, The Economics of Cultural Policy, also published by Cambridge University Press, appeared in 2010.
